Halloween is an ancient holiday that goes back to pre-Christian Celtic traditions. It is believed that the Celts celebrated a festival called Samhain on October 31st. This was a time to mark the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. During this festival, the Celts believed that the boundaries between the physical and spirit worlds were at their weakest. So spirits could more easily travel between them. People would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off evil spirits. People began to dress up in costumes and go door to door asking for food or money. This was a practice known as “souling.” By the 19th century, Halloween had become a secular, community-based event characterized by costumes, parties, and activities such as trick-or-treating. Today, Halloween is celebrated in many countries around the world and is a fun and popular holiday.
